What counts as a day
Some countries count any part of a day, others count only nights spent, and some disregard transit days. The rule that applies is the one in the national guidance, not a general convention.
The reference period matters just as much. A rolling period can keep a past trip inside the count long after the calendar year has ended.
Frequently asked questions
Do part-days count?
It depends on the country. Some count arrival and departure days in full, others use nights or exclude transit.
Does the rule always use a calendar year?
No. Calendar year, rolling twelve months and other periods are all used, so confirm the period before counting.
